James Wesley Cates, pioneer citizen, progressive business man, prominent in church and civic worker in the town and county, died suddenly at his home last Saturday night January 10, at 11 o'clock. His death comes as a great and sudden blow to the town, as he possibly ranked as the most prominent and influential citizen of the town for the past 30 years.

About four years ago Mr. Cates was in an automobile accident that came near causing his death and resulted in injuries that probably hastened his death. He recovered sufficiently to take up his work again in the business world and was actively engaged up to the end.

He was at his post all day Saturday, and although he complained for several days, he did not give up. After supper he went up town for the mail and got home about nine o'clock.

About ten o'clock he was taken ill and physicians came and administered to him, but in half an hour he sustained a stroke of paralysis and died instantly. Thus passed a man who has meant more to Burlington than any other man connected with his history. He was born September 30, , in the section of Orange county that later became a part of Alamance.

His parents were William and Sarah Cheek Cates, and his mother is now living at his home at the age of 90 years. Cates remembered distinctly the names and features of seven grandparents and great-grandparents, 17 uncles and aunts, 15 great-uncle and one great-great-uncle, who died at the age of He was married in to Miss Sarah Patterson, from which union three children survive.

In he was married to Miss Sarah Scott of Virginia, and six children survive this union. A remarkable coincidence is the similarity in the manner of his death and that of his wife. In the establishment of the Burlington Graded School he was largely instrumental and was one of the first members of Board of Trustees.

He was the last of the five original members of this board. He was secretary of the Chamber of Commerce for two years. Naming his activities is like giving a business directory of Burlington. The first Burlington postoffice box was rented by M. Cates and he was given the first telephone number and he made the first deposit in a bank of the city. For the past 20 years Mr. Cates has been engaged in selling fuel and all kinds of building material. His business life was a full one, but no fuller than his church and social life.

A man of rare judgment and an assiduous disciple of duty, Mr. Cates developed all the best sides of his nature She is survived by one daughter, Miss Thelma Cates of the home, two sisters, Mrs. Capps and the Rev. He was an esteemed and upright citizen and exerted an abiding influence for good, and like the ripened grain is gathered to his reward.

She liked to entertain and loved to square dance. Pat also enjoyed gardening, sewing, decorating and painting. But most of all she loved and enjoyed her family. We have learned a lot from her in our lifetimes. She will be greatly missed and always in our hearts. Pat is survived by her children, Andrew D.

Both Wanda and Everett knew they would marry each other the first time they saw each other, and they did, in They had one daughter together, Roxann, and spent the next 22 years happily married until his passing in She was known for her caring demeanor, compassion for others, and willingness to help those in need - traits treasured by her patients and family.

She spent her retirement with her late husband Glen Miller, who proceeded her in death in They enjoyed a nearly year long marriage living in Lake Odessa near their family. Wanda will be remembered by her grandchildren for the time she spent with them making cookies, paper dolls, and spending endless hours entertaining them.

Wanda was an avid reader, starting with a newspaper in the morning and ending the day with a book, but she also enjoyed watching westerns, completing word searches, and spending time with her beloved dog and her family. After graduation from Hastings High School Richard and his brother Skip and family went out to Oklahoma to work in the oil fields. When they came back in Richard got hired in to the Barry County Road Commission where he worked there for 25 years.

He loved being a truck driver but most of all he loved his family and his grandchildren were his world. He loved classic cars as well. And always found the joy in a good book.

He also enjoyed scrapping which his daughter loved to do with him. He loved listening to John Prine, Matalica and the Eagels. She was a teacher at Lakewood Public Schools for over 30 years where she taught many subjects.

Shirley had a love of reading, travel, walking and gardening or just being outside. Volunteering with Spectrum Hospice was very important to her as well. Amanda Lyne Bowling Amanda Lyne Bowling, age 39, of Hastings, was born on July 18, and passed away on Friday, July 17, with loved ones at her side after lifelong battle of illness. At the young age of 11 months, she suffered a febrile convulsion from a high fever. This caused her to have seizures throughout her childhood and young adult life.

Amanda was later diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was 8 years old, which continued to trouble her for the rest of her life. In , she was able to overcome her epilepsy through surgery, giving her the independence to driv, which she cherished so much.

She loved to spend time with her close friends and family members; whether it was going out to eat, shopping, travelling, or just hanging out around the house. She loved her younger siblings and her pets with all of her heart. No matter where she went around the house the dog and cat, Dixie and Kitty, were always by her side. She was our gift and truly enriched the lives of her loved ones. We will all miss her dearly and she will forever be our Angel.

She and Dick retired from teaching and built their home on Duncan Lake in Caledonia, spending summers and time with her family and winters in Florida and South Padre, Texas. She loved slow motor boat rides in the evening and spotting Dick from the paddle boat when he insisted on swimming back and forth across the lake well into his 70s.

She was a gracious host for family dinners — large and small — for holidays and Sunday afternoons at the lake. She loved sewing, making her own clothes in her younger years and designing and decorating every home and cottage with style.

Elden Jackson Elden Jackson, born November 6, , passed away on Wednesday, July 22, , after reaching the age of 88 years old. After a brief time of failing health, he passed peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family — in person and in spirit.

Elden had a love of painting, home building, farming, and serving others. He was honored to have had a piece of his artwork displayed at Art Prize. He donated many hours of his time and talent to numerous individuals and organizations, including moving the United Brethren Church onto a new foundation and then building an addition to the existing structure.

He was also responsible for the construction of Faith Bible Church. Elden spent many months doing construction projects at Camp Living Waters.

Many individuals have benefited from his help and experience, including the countless young men he mentored, helping them become productive, conscientious, and successful. Elden was known for his hard work and energetic spirit well into his later years. Elden empowered and inspired everyone to show up, work hard, and do their best.

Elden was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Thelma Jackson; his wife, W. He served over 50 years as a MHSAA official for many different sports and had the honor for 40 years as an official with the same football crew.

During the summer his family could be found camping, canoeing and fishing. Sports played a big part in his life.

He enjoyed 50s and 60s music including California Surf music. He was also a big fan of Johnny Cash. He would often sample their music, not always like it, but rarely complained about it. He also loved getting together with family.

He married Elizabeth Brodbeck on July 17, and she preceded him in death in Charles was a lifelong dairy farmer and worked 25 years for the fertilizer plant in Woodbury.

He loved Percheron horses, having two named Jack and Charlie and camping at Praireville farm days. Reading and later watching westerns also made Charles happy. Robert J. Durkee Robert J. Bob Durkee, age 72, of Lake Odessa passed away on July 26, at his home surrounded by his family. Bob grew up on a family farm, he was the boy his dad was waiting for. He had two older sisters who helped raise him. He loved his cap guns.

He grew up farming, and had a natural ability at sports and fixing automobiles. He loved fishing and cutting wood. While serving in Vietnam driving a bulldozer the Army taught him a few things. He came home and married Marian Benson and had three kids, he always worked hard and never turned down overtime.

But he also never missed a gymnastics meet, baseball game, football game, softball game, wrestling meet, cross country, soccer game, choir concert, musical. He officiated freestyle wrestling, and so did all three kids, including his daughter! This would sometimes end with the board being flipped. As grandkids came along he followed them thru their sports and was more than happy to teach them how to take care of their cars.

He loved liver and onions only his daughter will carry that on , and gizzards. Before it had been his weekend place, then it became is daily job.

He loved to hunt, and his Durkee Deer Camp is a thing of legends. Beer was drank ok a lot of beer and maybe a shot or two , Stories were told, Chili was eaten and they might have bagged a deer or two. As evidenced by the the antlers decorating the wall If the shop light was on, Bob was ready to tell you how you were not changing that wheel bearing the right way, often pushing you out of the way and doing it himself.

Which is what we secretly wanted him to do He taught his daughter, sons, granddaughters and grandsons alike. Changing your oil, or a wheel bearing should and could be done by anyone. Even holding him as his arms grew weak from the ALS that may have bent him, but never broke his spirit. The family offers a special thank you to Heather Rush delivering groceries and spending time talking and his granddaughter Christi his minute by minute care giver in his final months and this allowed him to pass at home on the family farm for all their extra effort.

The Wahoo was one of a very few diesel boat submarines that was still active in the Navy at the time.

While serving aboard the Wahoo Thomas became a Navy diver, another accomplishment of which he was very proud. Shortly before Thomas passed away he received a phone call from his former Navy Commander with whom he had a lengthy conversation.

He retired after 27 years, always working hard and dedicated to providing the best finished product for everyone the company served. Thomas was preceded in death by father, Phillip H. Thomas played in golf leagues, bowling leagues, and softball leagues for decades and was also a very avid fisherman, during the summer and on the ice in the winter.

Thomas was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. To know Thomas was to love him and he will forever be missed. He was a quiet, kind hearted schmoozer and could easily win people over. He loved animals, children and his friends were always thought of as family. He will be remembered as a hardworking, good, honest, dependable man.
