However, a variety of scholarships, loans, and grants are available to admitted students, regardless of the tuition and fee waiver, and Kaiser Permanente has a Financial Aid Officer to help you determine your eligibility. Though the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine is a recent addition to the medical school landscape, the admissions statistics are striking.

They accept 48—50 students per class, and the promise to waive tuition has attracted upwards of 11, applicants for the most recent class. According to U. News and World Report data for , Kaiser currently has the lowest acceptance rate in the nation: just 1. Who are the students that make the Kaiser cut? Kaiser Permanente lists the following required coursework :. Behavioral or social science: One semester or quarter examples include anthropology, economics, ethnic studies, psychology, and sociology.

General or inorganic chemistry, or equivalent: One year with lab. Humanities: One semester or quarter examples include art, English, history, literature, and philosophy. In addition, courses in organic chemistry and biochemistry, calculus, statistics, public health e. Their admissions website stresses, however, that each applicant will be considered holistically, and that admissions officers will look not only at your grades and test scores but also at your achievements in context.

July Kaiser secondary application opens. August —February Interviews conducted. October —March Offers of admission sent. November 1, Kaiser secondary application deadline. May 1, Deadline to commit to only one school. Kaiser Medical School employs rolling admissions, so you should plan to submit your primary and secondary applications as early as possible without sacrificing quality.

Kaiser does not pre-screen for its secondary application, so all applicants who complete the AMCAS application will be invited to complete the secondary application as well. With your AMCAS application behind you, you can devote your energy to crafting exceptional secondary essays. The — Kaiser secondary prompts are listed below, as well as strategies and sample essays. Question 1: During your career as a physician, you will potentially encounter many obstacles and be required to overcome many challenges.

Resilience is a prerequisite for success in medical school and beyond. Describe your experience with a situation that had an unfavorable outcome. How did you react, and how might you have responded differently.

What did you learn about yourself? Instead of asking for an example of success, as one would expect, it asks essentially for an example of disappointment. This is tricky, as there are obvious pitfalls to admitting an unfavorable outcome. But disappointing outcomes are par for the course in the medical field, and how you deal with them will be an important part of what makes you an exceptional physician. We work with local food banks and community organizers, delivering fresh produce in the warmer months to low income residents, as well as advocate for plant-based diets.

My first year in the program, I got to know Hector. He was in his 50s and had diabetes. His left leg had been amputated, and he was wheelchair-bound. We delivered to him three times a month, discussing how a plant-based diet would lead to better health outcomes and help him manage his diabetes. I grew close to Hector and his Boston terrier, Kermit. We talked about the Broncos, which he loved. I hoped we could help Hector change his health situation, and while we improved his quality of life, enabling him to better manage his diabetes, in the end, he passed away.

This broke my heart. I would bring this understanding to Kaiser Permanente Medical School. Question 2: Kaiser Permanente is committed to advancing equity, inclusion, and diversity for all. How will you contribute to the diversity of the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine? The diversity prompt is not limited to those from racial and socioeconomic minorities. Though not required, if you can answer this question in a way that feels specific to Kaiser Permanente, you should do so.

Perhaps you or a family member have had medical issues in the past and have sought treatment at a Kaiser Permanente heath center. I was lucky to grow up in Brookline, Massachusetts around all the healthcare I needed. When a friend needed emergency contraception, I drove her to the pharmacy, where she got it easily and affordably.

I also grew up with an understanding that this was the exception, rather than the rule. When I started to express interest in medicine, my mom suggested I volunteer with Planned Parenthood. As my fluency in Spanish grew, I served as interpreter sometimes. I learned to simply normalize the experience of being there. We get to know who she is and encounter her humility, which draws us directly into her career plans and how Kaiser can help her achieve them.

Question 3: Lifelong learning is an essential process for continued professional development. This includes reflection and being open and responsive to constructive feedback. While you should be honest here, whatever passion you choose to write about should have to do with healthcare or health-related sciences. What I remember most is not the anxiety, but rather this friendly man with his zany tie who made me feel better. I love working with children and want to give them the same childhood experience of doctors that I had: one that is free of fear and anxiety.

I believe that this kind of research is necessary and important, especially as we confront a world increasingly affected by climate change and relaxed environmental regulations.

I wanted to apply to Kaiser Permanente Medical School partly because of the flexibility provided by the tuition waiver. Pediatrics is one of the least lucrative specialties, but with the freedom from student loan debt that Kaiser Permanente provides, I can pursue my passion without having to worry so much about financial factors.

The applicant focuses on a single specialty and imbues her passion with an emotional core. For her, it matters on principle, as a part of who she is. This lets admissions officers know that pediatrics is a lifelong interest, rather than just a temporary fascination. One of the main benefits of waiving tuition is that it encourages medical students to be motivated by their passions rather than their pocketbooks.

Students are much more likely to pursue careers in lower-paying fields pediatrics, family medicine if they can avoid exorbitant student loan debt. Optional Unlimited length.

So I always say to students, think about the application process as kind of a marathon, almost an ultra marathon. Because our interviews are also structured with mission alignment in mind, a lot of how students present themselves to us is taken into account — How much do you know about the school?

Are we just another school on your list? Is the message that we get from you that you really, really want to be part of the school and part of the community? Try again. So it requires our students to really reflect and dig deep and think about how important it is for them ultimately to become physicians. I think you make an excellent point.

So I think that most med students would factor that into their decision making. So I think that is okay. We talked about that extensively last cycle, especially as there were cancellations by the AAMC and they did a great job in terms of catching up so that many, if not most applicants were in fact able to take the MCAT at least once.

One area that we discussed extensively was what that would do in terms of looking at candidates holistically. We do have a waitlist. We had this past year, just as we did our first year, a very robust waitlist.

We have wonderful admissions counselors who try to remain engaged when candidates engage with them. One of the things we started this past year, we are now doing weekly office hours. But we also want folks who really are saying we want to be at your school.

As I shared earlier, our school has a pretty significant focus on well being. We in no way use that negatively against our candidates, we actually embrace that. Again, I think for us, and the kind of school that we are, displaying that level of vulnerability is always going to be a positive thing. We look at them, we read them. In terms of things like felonies, et cetera, I think much of it is going to depend on what is going on there.

But we read through those. But I think the issue that could arise is, is there a significant discrepancy? Because again it really comes back to just transparency and truthfulness on the part of the applicant , but we are a school that I would like to believe grants a lot of grace.

We sometimes will see this in non-traditional students. So that absolutely matters. Great question. So I always, always, always encourage applicants to apply early.

This cycle opened up on May 27th. We will get applications on June 25th. I do encourage applicants though, to get those primary applications out by no later than the end of July. Obviously, some will be a little bit later and the main reason for that is there is sort of this four to six weeks verification process that AAMC has to go through.

So every week past the last week of July, will take you further along in the application cycle. The other important thing is we talk a lot about how competitive medical school is. And I do try to also highlight for applicants that part of the reason it is so competitive is there are, on a relative scale, enough slots for all the talent.

All the talented folks who apply to medical school. But the other big issue is schools run out of interview slots. A couple things I always, always highlight. And part of knowing when to apply is having that overall readiness.

The other thing I would encourage students to do is try to attend as many pre-health events as you can. AAMC has now pivoted to about two big virtual fairs every year.

It tends to have a ton of schools across the country who are fully engaged in those. The other piece is to try to really think about what doctoring means to you , and creating your own list of values. And with that beginning to look through the MSAR and start perusing schools. In our school, we do have weekly Wednesday office hours. So get into those virtual spaces where there are counselors and other folks who will actually have sound advice. Try to really get a lot of your more data driven questions answered through the AAMC or directly through different admissions offices.

So that would be my advice book for folks who are soon going to apply, but also those who may be a couple years out from applying. One is that many physicians have just gotten so, so busy, especially as the world has changed in the last year. The whole shadowing in person was almost a thing of the past during the pandemic. And how beneficial has shadowing been to any individual student?

You get a sense of kind of terminology and you get the opportunity to really observe that doctor-patient interaction in ways that you are almost fully engaged in. I will say that, given all of the challenges with COVID, I feel that we were able to pivot pretty seamlessly because of how our curriculum is structured especially during times when we had to either have hybrid engagement or all virtual engagement.

So we did quite well. And again, we do not think there was any connection in those two cases. We ended up going virtual after the holidays in light of the cases rising in LA County. We resumed in March in person. We did learn that though we can do it virtual, using a virtual platform, in-person is a lot more effective. But we learned that we really enjoy being in-person more than virtual. We were able to get instruction done. We were able to do it without skipping a beat.

Even the students endorsed preferring to be in-person. So we have a wonderful team. We have a wonderful group who are behind us, constantly keeping the spaces sanitized. Our students have been quite wonderful in terms of keeping their masks on, remaining distanced in the classrooms.

Because we only have 50 students this year, we were able to utilize just about every room in the school. Our students will be finished on July 2, and we will have M2s in mid July. They were and they had to be vaccinated. So again, we did have a little bit of a break from the students going out to their longitudinal integrated clerkships after the holiday; they were able to engage in March. That was definitely cut for a little bit. The other area that we did have a few challenges with in light of a pandemic were the service learning opportunities.

Our service learning leads are exploring options there. But even that has gone quite well. Great, thank you so much also for having me, Linda.
